Colombia’s Caño Cristales is a lovely rainbow river of paradise
Have you ever heard of Caño Cristales, Colombia’s five-colored river? Crystal River, The Liquid Rainbow, The River of Paradise, and even the Most Beautiful River in the World are just few of the labels given to this river. This river was breathtakingly gorgeous, with a unique biological miracle in the form of algae that formed colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue at the river’s bottom. The Caño Cristales is located in Colombia’s Sierra de la Macarena, in a remote, secluded area that is difficult to reach by road.
Because of terrorist activities in the area and concerns about tourism’s environmental impact, the location was restricted to tourists for several years. In 2009, it was reopened to guests, and currently, various Colombian tourist agencies offer flights to La Macarena. It’s a short drive from there to “Serrania de la Macarena,” the national park where Cano Cristales is found. Cano Cristales looks like any other river for much of the year, with a bed of rocks covered with drab green mosses exposed beneath a cool, clear water. Every year, however, the most spectacular metamorphosis occurs: the river blooms in a vivid burst of hues for a limited period of time.
In the dry season, there is a shallowness, and in the wet season, there is a swampiness, which does not provide that lighting rainbow effect all over. The spot is halfway between the two, and it’s possible that this is where the water level is just right for all of the colorful combinations of red, green, yellow, and blue algae. Here are some more stunning images of Cao Cristales, Colombia’s Rainbow River of Paradise, which is also known as the world’s most beautiful river. I’m curious if I’ll be able to visit these locations. It’s a truly magnificent river.
