These Were the Queen’s Favorite Vacation Destinations
People have been recalling encounters with the Queen on one of her numerous appearances across the world since her passing two weeks ago.
She served as the country’s monarch for 70 years, making her not just the longest-reigning monarch but also the most traveled.
Elizabeth II was particularly fond of a couple of these places and made further trips there outside the scope of her royal duties.
The Queen passed away at her Balmoral Estate, where Princess Eugenie claimed her grandmother was “most happy,” as is well known.
I believe she really, truly adores the Highlands, she continued. There are constantly dogs around, walks, picnics, and people coming and going all the time.
The Queen spent a lot of her leisure time in Balmoral, a 50,000-acre estate with beautiful lochs, mountains, and woodlands.
It developed into somewhat of a retreat for the royal family to unwind, but the Queen had a few other favorite places.
Canada
Having welcomed her 27 times, it is safe to assume that Canada was one of the Queen’s favorite travel destinations.
She and her family took part in various activities there, such as trekking through the Northwest Territories and admiring the scenery in Nova Scotia.
Additionally, the monarch opened the 15th Commonwealth Games in British Columbia by cutting the ribbon.
South Africa
Although it may be difficult to believe given her later travels around the world, the Queen didn’t really leave the UK until she was 20 years old.
She traveled to South Africa on her maiden overseas journey with the family right before she was engaged to Prince Philip.
The two-month stay included Princess Elizabeth’s 21st birthday and 35 nights on the exclusive royal White Train.
When she was 25 years old, the Queen and her husband Prince Phillip stayed at Treetops Lodge in Kenya before embarking on a royal tour.
It was an especially poignant spot for the monarch because it was there that she found out her father had passed away and that she would take the throne.
Brazil
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh traveled to South America, stopping in Brazil along the way, and experienced one of her most memorable moments there.
Copacabana Beach was passed as the royal couple rode in an open-top Rolls Royce while the monarch watched a cup final football game and presented Pelé with the trophy in front of cheering people.
‘I have strong and wonderful recollections of my trip to Brazil with Prince Philip in 1968, notably the friendliness and politeness of the Brazilian people’, she said in 2006.
Malta
Elizabeth II stayed in Malta for two years when Prince Phillip was stationed there, in an opulent home outside of Valetta that had been given to them by Lord Louis Mountbatten.
She continued to travel there as Queen more than six times, showing her affection for the pleasant climate and people.
The Queen said, “[Malta] was always extremely special for me,” in 2015. I recall spending lovely times with Prince Philip during our previous marriage here.
St Mawes, Cornwall
The Queen was known to have warm memories of this Cornish seashore location from her childhood, in addition to the Scottish Highlands.
Young Elizabeth and Margaret would frequently go with the Queen Mother to the harbor town, where they would stay at a remote estate to escape the stresses of royal life.
