The Great Dolomites Circuit: A 10-Day Road Trip Through Italy’s Most Dramatic Peaks, Lakes & Mountain Passes

This article contains affiliate links. If you book through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

The Dolomites are not a single valley that can be explored from one hotel. The most spectacular places are spread between South Tyrol, Alta Badia and the Belluno Dolomites, separated by high mountain passes. A badly planned itinerary can easily result in hours of unnecessary backtracking.

For this 10-day route, I would make a clockwise circuit beginning and ending in Bolzano:

Bolzano → Lago di Carezza → Passo Sella → Ortisei → Alpe di Siusi → Seceda → Val di Funes → Passo Gardena → Corvara → Fanes → Arabba → Marmolada → Passo Pordoi → Passo Falzarego → Cinque Torri → Passo Giau → Cortina d’Ampezzo → Fanes waterfalls → Lago di Braies → Prato Piazza → Tre Cime → Misurina → Dobbiaco → San Candido → Brunico → Bolzano.

It incorporates essentially everything you requested while using only four accommodation bases and keeping the driving to roughly 850–950 km over ten days.

Why these four accommodation bases work

BaseNightsWhy stay here
Ortisei3Best positioning for Alpe di Siusi, Seceda, Val Gardena and Val di Funes
Corvara2Central for Gardena Pass, Fanes, Arabba, Marmolada and the Sella group
Cortina d’Ampezzo3Perfect for Falzarego, Lagazuoi, Cinque Torri, Giau, Tofana, Fanes and Braies
Dobbiaco1Ideal final base for Tre Cime, Misurina, Dobbiaco, San Candido and the road toward Brunico

That gives you nine hotel nights without packing your bags every morning.

Important 2026 information before you go

Several famous Dolomites attractions now require more planning than older guides suggest.

Tre Cime: driving to Rifugio Auronzo requires an online parking reservation in 2026. The fee is €40 per car and the booking is valid for a 12-hour period. You cannot simply arrive and expect access.

Lago di Braies: from July 1 to September 15, 2026, between 09:00 and 16:00, entry into the Braies Valley requires public transport, a valid transit permit or an online reservation. The advance-booking package is €44 and includes access, parking and a €22 voucher.

Alpe di Siusi: the protected plateau road is closed to ordinary private traffic between 09:00 and 17:00. In 2026, P1/P2 parking reservations are also required from June 29. Staying in Ortisei avoids this complication because you can use the Ortisei gondola instead.

Seceda: Ortisei–Furnes–Seceda operates from May 22 to November 2, 2026. The 2026 adult return fare is €74.

Marmolada: the Malga Ciapela–Punta Rocca cable car runs from June 12 to September 27, 2026, weather permitting; the published return fare to Punta Rocca is €40.

Lagazuoi and Cinque Torri: Lagazuoi operates June 6–October 18 and the 5 Torri chairlift June 6–October 11 in 2026.

DAY 1 – Bolzano → Lago di Carezza → Passo Sella → Ortisei

Approx. 95 km | 2½–3 hours driving | Sleep: Ortisei

Starting this way is more efficient than driving from Carezza back through Bolzano. Instead, you enter the mountains and continue directly through Val di Fassa and Passo Sella towards Val Gardena.

🟢 MUST SEE – Bolzano

Allow 2–2½ hours.

Walk through the historic centre around Piazza Walther, Via dei Portici and the cathedral. Bolzano is useful as the gateway to the Dolomites rather than somewhere I would sacrifice an entire day to on this itinerary.

Leave by late morning.

🟢 MUST SEE – Lago di Carezza

Time: 1–1½ hours

The lake sits beneath the Latemar and Rosengarten/Catinaccio mountains and is famous for its intense green-blue colour.

Walk the short path around the lake and make your main photo stop from the classic northern shore viewpoint, where the Latemar reflects behind the water.

Photography: late morning is acceptable, but early morning is quieter and generally produces cleaner reflections.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Passo Costalunga

15–20 minutes

Continue east towards Val di Fassa.

Stop briefly around the pass for views of the Rosengarten before descending towards Vigo and Canazei.

🟢 MUST SEE – Passo Sella

45–60 minutes

Rather than visiting Passo Sella on a later day and repeating roads, cross it now.

The huge Sassolungo/Langkofel massif rises almost vertically beside the road.

Best photographic stops are near the top of the pass looking towards Sassolungo and across the Sella massif.

Continue through Selva di Val Gardena towards Ortisei.

Evening – Ortisei

Spend 1–2 hours walking through Ortisei’s centre.

Have dinner here and settle in for three nights.

DAY 2 – Alpe di Siusi + Ortisei + St. Jacob

Approx. 0–15 km | less than 30 minutes driving | Sleep: Ortisei

This is deliberately a low-driving day but not a relaxed day.

🟢 MUST SEE – Alpe di Siusi / Seiser Alm

Take the Ortisei–Alpe di Siusi gondola as soon as it opens.

For summer 2026 it operates from May 1 through November 2; between June 6 and October 16 it runs approximately 08:30–18:00. A return adult ticket is €41.

Allow 4½–5½ hours on the plateau.

Recommended hike

Mont Sëuc panoramic circuit

  • Distance: about 7–9 km
  • Time: 2½–3 hours
  • Elevation: approximately 200–300 m
  • Difficulty: easy/moderate
  • Equipment: hiking shoes; poles optional

Walk through the meadows with views towards Sassolungo, Sassopiatto and Sciliar.

Do not waste the day attempting to hike across the entire Alpe.

The objective here is scenery and photography.

Best photographs

Look for open meadow views with:

Sassolungo + Sassopiatto behind the alpine huts

and

Sciliar across the plateau.

Have lunch at one of the mountain rifugi.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – St. Jacob Church

After returning to Ortisei, make the short excursion towards St. Jacob / San Giacomo.

Allow around 1½ hours.

The little church against the Sassolungo massif is one of Val Gardena’s classic compositions.

🟡 OPTIONAL – Ortisei sunset

If you still have energy, take an evening walk above town rather than another cable car.

DAY 3 – Seceda → Val di Funes → Santa Maddalena

Approx. 80 km | 1¾–2 hours driving | Sleep: Ortisei

Today combines two of the most photographed landscapes in the entire Dolomites.

🟢 MUST SEE – Seceda

Take the first practical cable car from Ortisei.

The 2026 lifts operate from 08:30, and Seceda remains accessible until November 2.

Allow 3½–4½ hours including the cable cars.

Seceda ridge hike

  • Distance: 4–5 km
  • Duration: 1½–2 hours
  • Elevation: roughly 150–250 m
  • Difficulty: easy/moderate
  • Equipment: proper hiking shoes

Walk from the top station towards the famous Seceda ridgeline, then continue across the alpine meadows before returning.

You do not need the much harder 7.6 km ascent from Ortisei, which gains over 1,200 metres. Using the lift keeps the day compatible with Val di Funes.

📸 Best viewpoint

Walk beyond the first cable-car crowds until the jagged Odle/Geisler peaks line up behind the grass ridge.

Have an early lunch on the mountain and descend around 13:00.

🟢 MUST SEE – Val di Funes

Drive towards Santa Maddalena.

Allow 3–4 hours.

Santa Maddalena panorama

Walk to the famous viewpoint above the village.

This is the classic composition:

Santa Maddalena church + green valley + Odle mountains.

Allow approximately 45–60 minutes for the viewpoint walk.

🟢 MUST SEE – St. Johann in Ranui

Continue towards the tiny church in Ranui.

Allow 30–45 minutes.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – short valley walk

Spend another 60–90 minutes walking through the meadows rather than immediately returning to the car.

If possible, remain in Val di Funes until the late-afternoon light begins hitting the Odle peaks.

Return to Ortisei after sunset.

DAY 4 – Ortisei → Selva → Passo Gardena → Corvara → Fanes

Approx. 70–80 km | about 2¼ hours driving | Sleep: Corvara

Pack and leave Ortisei.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Selva di Val Gardena

Allow 30 minutes.

You already drove through Selva on Day 1, so today only make a short coffee/photo stop before climbing towards Passo Gardena.

🟢 MUST SEE – Passo Gardena

Allow 45–60 minutes.

This is arguably the most spectacular road crossing between Val Gardena and Alta Badia.

Look back towards Sassolungo and ahead towards the walls of the Sella massif.

📸 Photography

Stop close to the summit rather than at every roadside pullout.

Continue downhill through Colfosco towards Corvara.

Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park

Continue past San Cassiano towards Capanna Alpina.

The official car park costs €10 per day in summer

🟢 MUST SEE – Capanna Alpina → Rifugio Scotoni hike

This gives you a manageable introduction to the Fanes landscape without committing to an all-day trek.

  • Distance: 4 km return
  • Time: 1h40–2h
  • Elevation gain: about 250 m
  • Difficulty: easy/moderate
  • Equipment: hiking shoes

The official route from Capanna Alpina to Scotoni is approximately 2 km each way and takes about 50 minutes uphill. The hut lies within the Fanes-Senes-Braies Natural Park.

Have a late lunch in this area.

🟡 OPTIONAL

Continue another short distance above Scotoni if time and weather are excellent, but do not attempt the full Fanes plateau today.

Return to Corvara.

DAY 5 – Corvara → Arabba → Marmolada → Lago Fedaia → Passo Pordoi → Corvara

Approx. 105–120 km | about 3–3½ hours driving | Sleep: Corvara

One of the biggest landscape days of the road trip.

Leave around 07:00–07:30.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Passo Campolongo

Quick 15-minute photo stop while crossing towards Arabba.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Arabba

Allow 20–30 minutes.

Then continue towards Malga Ciapela.

🟢 MUST SEE – Marmolada

Take the cable car from Malga Ciapela to Punta Rocca at 3,265 m.

Allow 2–2½ hours.

The first ascent in summer 2026 is at 09:00 and the last descent from Punta Rocca at 16:30.

Stop at Serauta before or after reaching the summit for the Great War exhibits and glacier views.

Punta Rocca viewpoint

On a clear day the panorama encompasses an enormous section of the Dolomites.

Bring a jacket even when the valley is warm.

🟢 MUST SEE – Lago di Fedaia

Allow 30–45 minutes.

Follow the road beside the reservoir below the Marmolada.

This is one of the best road-level perspectives of the mountain itself.

Continue towards Canazei.

🟢 MUST SEE – Passo Pordoi

Allow 45–60 minutes without the cable car.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Sass Pordoi cable car

If visibility remains excellent, add 1–1½ hours.

The 2026 Sass Pordoi return fare is €32 for an adult.

The upper landscape is almost lunar.

If cloud has already covered the Sella group, save the money and continue.

Descend from Passo Pordoi directly towards Arabba, then cross Passo Campolongo back to Corvara.

This completes a loop rather than forcing you to repeat the road through Canazei.

DAY 6 – Corvara → Valparola → Falzarego → Lagazuoi → Cinque Torri → Passo Giau → Cortina

Approx. 70–80 km | around 2 hours driving | Sleep: Cortina

This may be the strongest single day of the itinerary.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Passo Valparola

Allow 20–30 minutes.

Stop beside the small lake and the old fort before continuing a few kilometres to Falzarego.

🟢 MUST SEE – Lagazuoi

Take the cable car from Passo Falzarego.

Allow 1½–2 hours.

The cable car operates every 15 minutes during its 2026 summer season.

At 2,700+ metres you can see the Tofane, Fanes, Sella and Marmolada.

Short hike

Walk around the summit and WWI positions.

  • Distance: 1–2 km
  • Time: 30–60 min
  • Elevation: minimal
  • Difficulty: easy, assuming dry paths

You do not need to tackle the tunnel system to enjoy Lagazuoi.

🟢 MUST SEE – Cinque Torri

Drive to Bai de Dones and take the chairlift.

The lift operates 09:00–17:00 from June 6 to October 11, 2026

WWI / Cinque Torri loop

  • Duration: 1½–2 hours
  • Elevation: approximately 70–150 m
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Equipment: hiking shoes

The official three-refuge/open-air museum circuit is approximately two hours with only about 67 metres of elevation difference.

Walk among the restored First World War trenches.

Lunch

This is one of the best days to have lunch at a mountain rifugio rather than in a town.

🟢 MUST SEE – Passo Giau

Drive here in late afternoon.

Allow 45–60 minutes.

The isolated profile of Ra Gusela above Passo Giau makes this one of the finest photographic locations in the Dolomites.

📸 Best light

Late afternoon and sunset.

Then descend into Cortina d’Ampezzo.

DAY 7 – Tofana → Cascate di Fanes → Cortina

Approx. 20–30 km | less than 1 hour driving | Sleep: Cortina

This day deliberately combines a 3,000-metre panorama with a forest-and-waterfall hike.

🟢 MUST SEE – Tofana di Mezzo

Take Freccia nel Cielo from Cortina to Cima Tofana, 3,244 m.

Allow 2–3 hours.

The full system operates from June 13 to September 27, 2026, with an adult Cortina–Cima Tofana return ticket of €45.

The ascent alone rises more than 2,000 vertical metres.

There is no need for a serious hike here; the altitude and panorama are the experience.

🟢 MUST SEE – Cascate di Fanes

After lunch, drive north towards Pian de Loa/Fiames.

Botanical trail to Fanes Waterfalls

  • Distance: 7 km
  • Duration: 2½ hours
  • Elevation gain: 249 m
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Equipment: normal hiking shoes

The official Cortina route follows the Fanes stream through the Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park.

This gives you a second, very different look at the Fanes region: forest, canyon and waterfalls rather than high limestone meadows.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Cortina d’Ampezzo

Spend the evening walking Corso Italia and the historic centre.

This is the time to see Cortina itself rather than giving it a rushed 20-minute stop between mountains.

DAY 8 – Cortina → Lago di Braies → Prato Piazza → Cortina

Approx. 105–120 km | 2½–3 hours driving | Sleep: Cortina

Leave Cortina around 06:15–06:30.

🟢 MUST SEE – Lago di Braies

Aim to arrive around 07:30.

Allow 2–2½ hours.

Find places to stay in Cortina d’AmpezzoCar hireAffiliate

Lago di Braies loop

  • Distance: approximately 3.5–4 km
  • Duration: 1–1½ hours
  • Elevation: modest
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Equipment: walking/hiking shoes

Do the complete lake circuit rather than photographing only the boathouse.

The quieter far shore provides some of the best views.

Important summer access

From July 1–September 15, 2026 the valley has regulated vehicle access between 09:00 and 16:00. Booking ahead remains the safest approach even if you intend to arrive early, because arriving before 09:00 does not guarantee an available parking space.

🟢 MUST SEE – Prato Piazza / Plätzwiese

Continue towards the high plateau.

Allow 2½–3 hours.

Walk into the open landscape towards the Croda Rossa and Cristallo views.

Short plateau hike

  • Distance: 4–6 km
  • Duration: 1½–2 hours
  • Elevation: around 150–250 m
  • Difficulty: easy

Private-car access is regulated. In 2026 only 100 cars are allowed; the toll is €10. During July 1–September 15 you must drive up before 09:00 or after 16:00, while June and post-September 15 rules are slightly less restrictive.

Because you will likely arrive later, use the shuttle from Ponticello/Brückele during the restricted period rather than designing the day around getting a second early-morning vehicle slot.

Return to Cortina.

DAY 9 – Cortina → Tre Cime → Lago di Misurina → Lago di Dobbiaco → San Candido

Approx. 75–90 km | about 2 hours driving | Sleep: Dobbiaco

Reserve the earliest sensible Tre Cime entry slot.

🟢 MUST SEE – Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Drive via Misurina and Lago d’Antorno to Rifugio Auronzo.

Recommended short version

Rifugio Auronzo → Rifugio Lavaredo → Forcella Lavaredo → return

  • Distance: approximately 5–6 km
  • Duration: 2–2½ hours
  • Elevation: about 200–250 m
  • Difficulty: easy/moderate
  • Equipment: hiking shoes and warm/waterproof layer

Forcella Lavaredo gives you the famous view towards the northern walls without requiring the complete circuit.

🔵 Full Tre Cime circuit

If you are comfortable exceeding your preferred 3-hour hiking limit:

  • Distance: approximately 10 km
  • Duration: 3–4 hours
  • Elevation: around 400 m

The official Auronzo tourism authority gives roughly these figures for the complete loop.

If you do the full loop, shorten the later town stops.

🟢 MUST SEE – Lago di Misurina

On the descent, stop for 45–60 minutes.

The easy lake loop is about 2.5 km and takes roughly 30–60 minutes.

📸 Photograph

Use the southern lakeshore to frame the mountains behind the water.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Lago di Dobbiaco

Allow 45–60 minutes.

This is smaller and quieter than Braies, which is exactly why it works well late in the day.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – San Candido / Innichen

Allow 1–1½ hours.

Walk through the pedestrian centre and stop for dinner before returning the short distance to Dobbiaco.

Sleep here for your final night.

DAY 10 – Dobbiaco → Brunico → Kronplatz → Bolzano

Approx. 110–125 km | around 2 hours driving | Finish: Bolzano

The road west through the Puster Valley naturally closes the circuit.

🟢 MUST SEE – Brunico / Bruneck

Allow 1½–2 hours.

Walk through the historic centre and up towards the castle.

After nine days dominated by nature, Brunico adds a genuine South Tyrolean town rather than another photo stop.

🔵 RECOMMENDED – Kronplatz / Plan de Corones

If visibility is good, spend approximately 2½–3 hours here.

The Dolomiti Supersummer 2026 season in the Kronplatz area extends from May into early November, although individual lift operation should always be checked before travel.

At the summit you get a final enormous panorama over the Dolomites.

You can also visit the summit museums if they interest you.

🟡 OPTIONAL – Bressanone

If you finish early, stop in Bressanone/Brixen for approximately one hour on the way back to Bolzano.

Otherwise drive directly south.

Arriving in Bolzano completes the circular route.

The perfect first introduction to the Dolomites.

2. Selva → Passo Gardena → Colfosco → Corvara

Short but spectacular almost continuously.

3. Corvara → Arabba → Marmolada → Fedaia → Passo Pordoi

High mountains, glaciers, reservoirs and huge rock walls.

4. Corvara → Valparola → Falzarego → Passo Giau → Cortina

Possibly the most photogenic road day of the trip.

5. Cortina → Misurina → Lago d’Antorno → Tre Cime

The final approach towards the Tre Cime is extraordinary in clear weather.

Parking Advice for 2026

Seceda: there is a paid garage directly at the cable-car station. Current published maximum is €30/day, although hotel parking plus walking from central Ortisei is preferable.

Alpe di Siusi: use the Ortisei gondola. If driving to Compatsch instead, remember the 09:00–17:00 road restriction and 2026 parking-reservation requirement.

Capanna Alpina: €10/day in summer.

Mountain passes: Gardena, Sella, Pordoi, Falzarego and Giau have roadside/pass parking, but spaces disappear quickly between roughly 10:00 and 15:00 in July and August.

Cinque Torri: park at Bai de Dones and use the chairlift.

Lago di Braies: pre-book during regulated periods rather than gambling on an early-arrival space.

Tre Cime: book online before the trip. In 2026 a car costs €40 and entry without a valid reservation/licence plate is not permitted.

Approximate Budget for Two People – 10 Days

Accommodation – 9 nights

For decent 3-star/B&B accommodation:

June or September: approximately €1,800–€2,800

July/August: approximately €2,600–€4,200+

Published 2026 hotel rates show just how seasonal the area can be: example properties in Ortisei list rates from roughly €113–159 per person/night depending on season, while a Cortina property lists roughly €115–160 per person/night for B&B.

Fuel

Plan for approximately 850–950 km.

As of September 19, 2026, self-service petrol averages about €2.19/L in Bolzano Province and €2.15/L in Veneto.

For a car consuming roughly 7–8 L/100 km:

€150–€180

Parking + mountain-road access

Approximately:

€140–€220

Tre Cime alone accounts for €40.

Cable cars for two

Approximate core itinerary:

  • Alpe di Siusi: €82
  • Seceda: €148
  • Marmolada: €80
  • Lagazuoi: roughly €60–80
  • Cinque Torri: roughly €50–60
  • Tofana: €90

Allow approximately €510–€560.

Add another €64 if both of you take Sass Pordoi.

Food

Mixing supermarket/bakery breakfasts, rifugio lunches and restaurant dinners:

€80–€120/day for two

Total:

€800–€1,200

Tourist taxes and miscellaneous fees

Approximately:

€60–€120

Overall trip cost for two, excluding flights and car rental

June/September: approximately €3,500–€5,100

July/August: approximately €4,400–€6,800+

When Should You Do This Road Trip?

June

Advantages: very long days, lush meadows, waterfalls strong, wildflowers and lighter crowds.

Disadvantages: snow can remain on high trails and not all lifts open at the beginning of June. In 2026, Marmolada begins June 12 and many Alta Badia summer operations begin around mid-June.

Best: second half of June.

July

Advantages: almost everything open, maximum daylight, green landscapes.

Disadvantages: increasingly busy after mid-month, thunderstorms common in the afternoon.

Excellent for this itinerary if you start early every day.

August

Advantages: essentially all tourist infrastructure operating.

Disadvantages: heaviest traffic, highest accommodation prices, busiest lifts and most difficult parking.

I would choose August only if your dates are fixed.

September

For this particular itinerary, the first half of September is arguably the strongest period.

The visibility can be excellent, temperatures are more comfortable for hiking and the crowds begin decreasing.

The downside is progressive lift closure later in the month. In 2026, Marmolada and Tofana both end their summer season on September 27, while Seceda, Lagazuoi and Cinque Torri continue longer.

My preferred window

June 20 – July 15
or
September 1 – September 15

for the best compromise between operational lifts, scenery, weather and crowds.

What to Do When the Weather Is Bad

The biggest advantage of using four bases is that you can swap days within each base without destroying the route.

Bad-weather areaMove the mountain day toDo instead
OrtiseiSwap Days 2 and 3Ortisei, Castelrotto, Val di Funes villages, Bolzano
CorvaraSwap Days 4 and 5Corvara, San Cassiano, Arabba; lower Fanes walk
CortinaSwap Days 6–8Cortina centre, WWI museums, Brunico, shorter forest walks
Braies / Tre CimeSwap Days 8 and 9San Candido, Dobbiaco, Brunico
High passes closedWait for road reopeningUse valley routes rather than forcing a high-pass crossing

Most importantly, do not use the itinerary as a rigid timetable if thunderstorms or heavy cloud are forecast. Seceda, Marmolada, Tofana and Tre Cime lose much of their value when completely inside cloud. Save the clearest forecast day for the highest mountain.

For your objective — maximum scenery without turning ten days into a chaotic race — this route covers an unusually large portion of the Dolomites while still keeping almost every drive under about 3½ hours. The only significant repetition is unavoidable local mountain access; the overall movement remains a genuine clockwise circuit rather than a collection of day trips from one town.
