People on the internet have shared 12 don’ts of traveling in America

When tourists visit a new country, they may be unaware of certain aspects. This ignorance results in uncomfortable situations for both tourists and locals.

Someone recently asked, “What is something that a visitor to America should NEVER do?” Many people shared their tips on what not to do in America. So, if you’re planning a trip to America, this thread might come in handy. Continue reading to find some answers.

Do not defame american customs

“If you are invited to someone’s home, don’t talk about how you think a holiday or an American custom is stupid. We once had a German visitor who was invited to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving. She spent the entire day complaining about how it wasn’t a real holiday and was just an excuse for fat Americans to eat more. It was extremely offensive and made everyone’s day miserable. If you are invited to someone’s home, at the very least try to be respectful.”

Do not underestimate travel distances

roadtrip

“Do not underestimate distances. When I was a tour guide, far too many customers asked how many HOURS the train to New York was [in Seattle], and I had to put their jaw back in place when I told them it was 5 days.”

Do not approach raccoons

Raccoons are cute… from a distance.

Please do not photograph the Amish

amish

“Do not take pictures of the Amish. It’s really rude to them.”

Do not assume that places will be walkable or rely solely on public transportation; also friendly american alert

disneyland

“Don’t underestimate the size of the United States.” Many international visitors believe they can visit Disneyworld and the Grand Canyon in one or two days. America is enormous. We have 50 states for a reason.

Also, don’t expect to be able to walk everywhere or to have access to a reliable public transportation system. Although most cities have good public transportation, America is built around the automobile. We have drive-through banks, pharmacies, fast food restaurants, and in some states, liquor stores.

Don’t be surprised if Americans wave and approach you at random. We’re a chatty bunch, but avoid hot-button topics.”

In the Midwest or Northeast, don’t assume that sunshine means warm weather

snow

“Be prepared if you visit the Midwest or northeast during the winter, and don’t assume that sunshine means warm weather. It can be deceptively cold at times.”

If you’ve been pulled over by the police, don’t get out of your car

police

“If you are pulled over by the police, do not exit your vehicle unless they ask you to. The cops may sit in their vehicle for a while, then approach the window and expect you to hold a conversation with them while sitting in the car.”

Do not assume that the item’s price is actually what it costs because taxes apply

price tag

“Do not assume that the price shown on an item for sale is the price you will pay for that item.”

When you go to pay, taxes are almost always added to the price.”

In Florida, do not swim in bodies of standing water

florida

“If you find yourself in Florida, do not swim in any of the lakes, ditches, or channels. Alligators can (and do) live in any body of standing water. Water moccasins are another possibility. And possibly diseases.”

Unless absolutely necessary, avoid going to the hospital

“Go to the hospital only if absolutely necessary.” They’ll charge you $2,100 for a s***ty Walgreens splint and an x-ray, the memes don’t lie.”

Do not interact with people who inquire about your plans for the next day in Las Vegas

vegas casino

“If you’re in Las Vegas, don’t talk to anyone who asks if you’ll be there tomorrow night. They’re attempting to entice you into a timeshare presentation, and despite offering free show tickets, meal vouchers, and even cash, it’s not worth it! The tour and “short” presentation will be much longer (and obnoxiously higher pressure) than you’d expect, and they know you’re not going to leave without the promised reward that they only give you at the end.

These people are usually found at the entrances to malls or casinos, in what appear to be information booths. Either say “no,” regardless of how long you’re going to be there, or simply ignore them.

Also, unless you want to promote strippers, don’t accept cards handed out by people wearing brightly colored shirts on the strip.”

Do not underestimate the southwest’s extreme heat

heat

“Visiting the southwest United States?” California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and so on. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE HEAT; all too often, people attempt a hike in 113° and require rescue. That is not good for anyone.”
