Locations Where Netflix’s “Wednesday” Was Filmed
The doors to Nevermore Academy opened on November 23 with the release of Wednesday, a new Tim Burton-directed Netflix series. Wednesday Addams’ magical and mischievous ways are chronicled in the live-action show, as she hones her psychic abilities at the extraordinary academic institution for outcasts. Jenna Ortega plays the title character, the only child of Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia Addams (Catherina Zeta-Jones), and Pugsley’s sister (Isaac Ordonez).
Wednesday is set in a world of gothic castles, haunting forests, and ornate ballrooms. The series was shot in a variety of locations throughout Romania, including mountain towns and Bucharest, the country’s capital. (Spoiler alert: you can visit Nevermore Academy in person!) Here, we look at each of Netflix’s strikingly beautiful filming locations for Wednesday.
The setting is important in the series because it helps to bring the gothic-style universe to life. If you’re wondering where the visually appealing series was shot, you’ve come to the right place! All of the shooting locations are listed below!
Cantacuzino Castle
What’s the first stop on our Wednesday filming location tour? Of course, it’s Nevermore Academy. The series used Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni, Romania, for exterior shots of the school. The neo-Romanian fortress was built in 1911 for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, Bucharest’s twice-elected mayor and Romania’s Prime Minister in the late 1800s and early 1900s. According to House Beautiful, Netflix altered the design of the castle’s roof with special effects. Visitors and tours are welcome to the castle and its grounds, which include a park, grotto, fountains, courtyard, and church.
Politehnica University of Bucharest
The school from which Wednesday is expelled in the first episode of the series was filmed at the Politehnica University of Bucharest, a research institution founded in the nation’s capital in 1818. The Bazinul de Înot Dinamo, a swimming pool located in a sports park in Bucharest, is where Wednesday unleashes two bags of piranhas on the water polo team, according to Netflix Romania.
Casa Monteoru
According to Netflix Romania, the interior shots of Nevermore Academy were shot in Casa Monteoru. The historic house is located in Bucharest, Romania’s capital. Wednesday and her classmates navigate Nevermore’s halls and visit Principal Weems’ office, which features its grand marble staircase and ornate rooms.
Conacul Olga Greceanu
According to Netflix Romania, Conacul Olga Greceanu appears in episode 6 of the series when Wednesday discovers the home where Garrett Gates once lived. Dâmbovița, a county just north of Bucharest, is home to the stately home and Romanian historical landmark.
Bucharest Botanical Garden
According to Netflix Romania, the greenhouse at Nevermore Academy is located in the Gradina Botanica Dimitrie Brândza, also known as the Bucharest Botanical Garden. It was founded in 1860 and bears the name of its founder, Dimitrie Brândza. The garden is located in Romania’s capital’s Cotroceni neighborhood and houses a variety of plants and botanical species.
Gara Regala
For the station near Nevermore Academy, Netflix used Gara Regala, a train station in Sinaia, Romania. Sinaia is a picturesque town in the Bucegi Mountains of Romania that was once home to a Romanian royal family.
Jericho, Pilgrim World, and other locations
The nearby town, Jericho, Pilgrim World, the sheriff’s house, and even the Nevermore quad were built almost entirely for the show. Buftea Studios in Buftea, Romania, built these locations.
Poe Cup lakes
Two different locations were used for the scenes shot during the tense race for the Poe Cup. According to IMDb, the scenes were shot across two lakes in Romania, Brănești and Sterbei.
