Disneyland: A unique perspective on things to do

Let’s be serious. Those of us who live within driving distance of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, may grow weary of the original iconic amusement park. So, rather than producing “the same ol’ same ol'” that you can find elsewhere, we decided to take a different approach.
We decided to see Disneyland through the eyes of a first-time visitor. We decided to see the theme park through the eyes of visitors from other countries. Following some online research and in-person interviews, here is a new perspective on things to do at Disneyland.

The Fire Department

When you enter the park, look for the Fire Department. Take a look at the second floor. There is a light in the window that once belonged to Walt Disney.

Disney wanted to keep an eye on the park’s construction. He stayed in the apartment when it first opened to watch the crowds pour in. Since his death, the light has remained on to keep his spirit there.

Disneyland Railroad

Many newcomers recommended starting with the steam-powered Disneyland Railroad. The 18-minute journey allows you to gather your bearings and make plans, as well as stopping in several locations along the way.

Themed Lands

Disneyland is divided into nine distinct zones:

  • Adventureland
  • Critter Country
  • Fantasyland
  • Frontierland
  • Main Street, U.S.A.
  • Mickey’s Toontown
  • New Orleans Square
  • Tomorrowland
  • (Note: As you read this Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge should also be open.)

The simple truth is that there is a lot to do and a limited amount of time to accomplish it in.

Character Experiences

Meeting characters from your favorite Disney books, TV shows, and movies should be part of a unique rare visit to Disneyland. While many people opt for photos with Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse, you can also obtain their autographs. If you didn’t bring an autograph book with you to California, several of the park’s stores (and Downtown Disney) sell them.

This is especially recommended by children from other countries because it provides an additional souvenir of their unique stay. It is also recommended that you download the Disneyland app for your smartphone if you are serious about meeting as many characters as possible in a timely manner. It will assist you in discovering your unique favorites.

Characters are frequently encountered in locations relevant to their adventures. Captain Jack Sparrow, for example, can frequently be encountered at Adventureland or New Orleans, next to the iconic Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Keep an eye out for any publicized schedules as well. To prevent long(er) lineups, it’s always a good idea to view the most popular characters first. Recent visitors from Australia and New Zealand waited “nearly an hour” in Toontown to shake Mickey Mouse’s hand.

Buying Disney Souvenirs

A set of mouse ears is a classic (if not downright “must buy”) souvenir. Mickey or Minnie ears have become almost legendary. Two popular stores for autograph books, ears, t-shirts, and other items are recommended by those in the know:

  1. World of Disney (Found in Downtown Disney)
  2. Elias & Co. (Found in Disney’s California Adventure Park)

Disneyland Parades, Shows, And Fireworks

A Disneyland parade is another must-see attraction. There are a variety of parades, just like fireworks shows, and the one that is currently running may change by the time you read this. They usually travel down Main Street or the Fantasyland corridor.

The highlight, as we go to press, is Mickey’s Soundsational Parade, which has taken the place of a Pixar parade. The featured floats are said to be a celebration of both color and song, and they reflect some of Disney’s classic films as well as music styles from throughout the world. Stiltwalkers, costumed dancers, musicians, and, of course, a variety of popular Disney characters are among the performers.
