Some cities are fine all year. Others have one season where everything clicks: the light turns golden, the air gets crisp, the crowds thin out and every park looks like a painting. For a lot of places, that season is autumn.
These are nine cities that are really worth visiting right now, or any time between October and late November.
Kyoto, Japan
If you only pick one city from this list, make it this one. Kyoto in November is something else. The maple trees around the temples turn deep red, the old gardens fill with fallen leaves and the evenings get a soft glow that makes every lantern look better. The color usually peaks in the second half of November.
Go early in the morning to places like Tofuku-ji, Eikando and the bamboo area in Arashiyama, since they get busy fast. Some temples open in the evening for special light shows, and they are worth booking. Hotels fill up weeks in advance in November, so do not leave it late.

Seoul, South Korea

Seoul is a great fall city and not many people think of it. Ginkgo trees along the streets turn bright yellow, and the palaces in the middle of the city, especially Changdeokgung with its secret garden, look incredible in autumn. Take the cable car up to Namsan Tower for a view of the whole city in golden light, then eat something hot in a market afterward. The street food is better when the weather is cold.

Vienna, Austria
Vienna is made for cool weather. It is the kind of city where you walk through a park in the morning, spend the afternoon in a coffeehouse with cake and a newspaper and then go to a concert in the evening. The gardens at Schönbrunn Palace are beautiful when the leaves change, and the hills of the Vienna Woods are a short ride from the center. Make time for a heuriger, a small wine tavern on the edge of the city where locals drink the new wine with simple food. It is cheap, friendly and very Viennese.

Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is one of the few cities where cold weather actually improves the experience. The thermal baths are at their best when the air is chilly, and sitting in the outdoor pool at Széchenyi with steam rising around you is a perfect autumn activity. The Danube looks moody and beautiful in the evening, and the city is much cheaper than Vienna or Prague, so you can eat and drink well without thinking about it. Try a ruin bar after dark for something completely different.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague gets very crowded in summer and calms down a lot in autumn. The Old Town is still beautiful, but you can finally walk through it without elbowing through tour groups. Climb Petřín Hill for a view over the red roofs and golden trees, then walk down through the orchards. Go early to Charles Bridge, when the mist is still on the river, and spend the evening in a traditional pub with a dark beer and a plate of goulash.

Edinburgh, Scotland
This is the city for people who love atmosphere. The castle looks darker and more dramatic in fall, the old streets feel like something from a novel, and the hills around town turn golden and copper. Walk up Arthur’s Seat for a wide view, wander through Dean Village, where the trees along the river change color, and then warm up in a pub with a whisky. The days are short, but that just makes the evening lights of the Old Town feel better.

Paris, France
Paris in autumn is a bit of a cliché, and it is a cliché for a reason. The Tuileries and Luxembourg Gardens turn gold, street vendors sell hot roasted chestnuts and the cafe terraces still have heaters and blankets for those who want to sit outside. Montmartre is quieter than in summer, and the museums are less packed. Pick a rainy afternoon for the Musée d’Orsay or the Louvre and keep the dry days for walking along the Seine.

Lisbon, Portugal
If you want a fall city that is still warm, Lisbon is the best option here. November days are often mild and sunny, around 18 to 20 degrees, which is perfect for walking up and down its steep hills. Around St. Martin’s Day on November 11, street sellers roast chestnuts and people drink a young wine called água-pé, a local autumn tradition. Hop on the old yellow trams, ride out to the coast at Cascais or just sit at a viewpoint with a pastel de nata and watch the sun set over the river.

Rome, Italy

The summer heat is gone, the lines are shorter and the light turns golden by mid afternoon. Rome in autumn is the best time to walk around without feeling like you are melting. Seasonal food is a reason to come by itself: artichokes, pumpkin pasta, chestnuts and new olive oil. Pick a day to walk through Villa Borghese, where the trees turn yellow, and another to wander through Trastevere in the evening. Even the big sights like the Colosseum and the Vatican are easier to enjoy now.

A few things to know before you book
Foliage depends on the weather, and it shifts a few days or even weeks from year to year. Check local forecasts or tourism sites a week before you go, especially for Kyoto and Seoul, where timing really matters.
Days get shorter, so plan the outdoor stuff for the middle of the day and keep museums, cafes and baths for the evenings. A light waterproof jacket and a warm layer are enough for most of these cities, and an umbrella that fits in a bag will save you more than once.
Prices drop quickly once the summer rush ends. Hotels in Europe are often 30 to 40 percent cheaper than in July, and flights too, with the exception of Kyoto in late November, which is the one place on the list where everything gets more expensive.
If you cannot decide, think about the kind of fall you like. Glowing red leaves and temples, Kyoto. Warm and bright, Lisbon. Cozy and a bit moody, Edinburgh or Prague. Whatever you pick, go with an open schedule and plenty of time to sit down with a hot drink and just look around.
