Beautiful Filming Locations for Avatar

avatar

Without a doubt, Avatar is one of the most visually stunning films ever made. The scenery in this film makes our world appear dull and uninteresting. They took visuals to a whole new level. Not only was the scenery breathtaking, but so was the film itself! For ten years, it was the highest-grossing film in the world! That is, until Avengers: Endgame came out. Simply put, everything about the film was fantastic. If you didn’t already know, Avatar 2 is set to be released in 2021! Making a sequel to such a great film is difficult, but we have faith that they will do it justice!

If you’re here, you’re probably wondering, “Where was Avatar filmed?” So, we went out and gathered as much information as we could about all of the locations used in the film’s production. Obviously, CGI is used extensively in this film, but there are some stunning real-world locations included. With the second film in the series on the horizon, we wanted to go back and see if any of these locations made it into the new one. Just keep scrolling to find out which breathtaking locations were used to film this movie.

In New Zealand

We’ll begin with one of the world’s most beautiful countries. New Zealand provided the filmmakers with some incredible scenery inspiration for the film. They stayed in Wellington at Stone Street Studios while in New Zealand. They stayed for a little more than a month, with over a thousand people working on the film! Other than this, not much of the beautiful country was used in the film.

In Hawaii

Hawaii comes up next. Hawaii was instrumental in the creation of Avatar. Though it didn’t make it into the film, it did help everyone involved in the production get a sense of what a rainforest was like. The cast was sent to the Hawaiian Tropical Rainforest to get a sense of the type of setting they will be in for the film.

In China

Finally, we arrive in China. We’ve got what you were looking for. In the film, we see one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The floating Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora! This is actually a real-world location! Well, sort of. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was used for this, along with some incredible CGI. When you look at this forest, it looks almost exactly like the one in the film. You can see for yourself what an incredible location it is.

Unfortunately, other than this location, the producers did not use any other locations to film. They did use studios in California, but nothing else. Though it is unfortunate that the majority of the locations in the film are created with CGI, it is comforting to know that much of the film was inspired by reality!
