The Swiss are often proud of their culture and traditions, so much so that the canton (state) Appenzell Innerrhoden was the last in Europe to grant women the right to vote. And it was only through the intervention of Switzerland’s Federal Supreme Court that they were able to do so in the end.

The country’s mountains, on the other hand, are significantly shorter than those of Switzerland. The tallest mountain is Großglockner, which rises 3,767 meters or 12457 feet. That is much shorter than Monte Rosa, which stands at 4,634 meters (15,203 feet).

Austria is an excellent choice for those seeking a historical and cultural experience. Those looking for a low-cost vacation should go to Austria rather than Switzerland. Travelers who want to have an epic Alpine experience should visit both Switzerland and Austria, and possibly add Bavaria to their itinerary if they have a couple weeks to spare. After all, each of these destinations’ alpine scenery has its own distinct charm.
